Setting Up Shop: The Business of Open-Source Software
نویسنده
چکیده
oftware companies face many challenges in growing their businesses. Product lines must evolve—new products and add-ons to existing products are essential to bring in new incremental revenue. Product quality must be monitored and improved. Engineering must support current and older releases while still driving innovation. Employees must be motivated by interesting opportunities and more than standard incentives. Many companies must also recruit third-party developers and integrators, who in effect help sell the com-pany's products by increasing their value to customers. These software business challenges are interconnected in two ways. First, most if not all are functions of constrained resources. Few companies have enough people , money, or time to do everything that needs doing, especially when competing against larger companies with greater resources. Second, a strategy exists to address all these challenges at once: turning some (or in exceptional cases all) of a com-pany's software products into open-source ones. Here's how an open-source development model can help commercial soft ware companies overcome many of the challenges they face in growing their business.

Minimizing the total tardiness and makespan in an open shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup times
We consider an open shop scheduling problem with setup and processing times separately such that not only the setup times are dependent on the machines, but also they are dependent on the sequence of jobs that should be processed on a machine. A novel bi-objective mathematical programming is designed in order to minimize the total tardiness and the makespan. Among several mult...
متن کاملA Tabu Search Method for a New Bi-Objective Open Shop Scheduling Problem by a Fuzzy Multi-Objective Decision Making Approach (RESEARCH NOTE)
This paper proposes a novel, bi-objective mixed-integer mathematical programming for an open shop scheduling problem (OSSP) that minimizes the mean tardiness and the mean completion time. To obtain the efficient (Pareto-optimal) solutions, a fuzzy multi-objective decision making (fuzzy MODM) approach is applied. By the use of this approach, the related auxiliary single objective formulation can...

This case study is intended to be used as a comprehensive how-to manual for setting up a resilient firewall utilizing best practices found across the open-source web. It also is intended to give a chronology of how a hacker team utilizing commonly available scripts might function. The defensive team utilized current open-source best practices in order to set up and protect a network running the...
متن کاملOne-operator, two-machine open shop and flow shop problems with setup times for machines and weighted number of tardy jobs objective
One-opeator two-machine open shop and ow shop problems are NP-hard in the ordinary sense even if all the weights are the same. We discuss two di erent pseudo polynomial dynamic programming recursions for each of the open shop and ow shop case. Some of the running times are better than those of the best known algorithms in the literature.
متن کاملThe Economic and Legal Foundations of Open Source Software
But what most people don't understand about open source software is why jt works. Software released as open source costs money and time to make-it has value. To some people. especially those who are more business-minded, this sounds like a throwback to late-90s dot-corn-era business plans: give your product away for free and make it up on volume. They see very few business models in that sort o...
